Mileage Table - Points within the Black Hills
This table gives approximate mileages and
travel
times between various points within and near the Black Hills. The table
assumes the most direct route (shown in the last column) and travel
time
without stops. Actual driving times may be less or more depending on
your
personal driving habits.
The routes indicated are not necessarily the
best routes, as some people may prefer a more scenic route than the one
indicated. For instance, the suggested route between Deadwood and
Spearfish
uses US Highway 85 north to Interstate 90, about 16 miles. Most
visitors,
however, prefer the Spearfish Canyon route (US 85 south to US14A) which
is actually 33 miles and could take an hour or more to travel --
especially
with stops.
The Roosevelt Inn is located just two miles
east of Mt. Rushmore so for most purposes you can consider the
distances
from the Roosevelt Inn the same as those from Mt. Rushmore.

If you study this chart for more than a couple
of minutes, something should be clear: If you stay in any of the cities
at the edges of the Black Hills, you will need to allow extra travel
time
to get to many of the sights you want to see.
This may not seem like a big factor. But if,
for instance, you choose to stay in Rapid City, do you want a 45-minute
drive back to your motel after the Mt. Rushmore Lighting Ceremony ends
at 10 p.m.?
