Air Travel to the Black HillsVirtually all air travel to and from the Black Hills is via Rapid City Regional Airport. The airport (airline code RAP) is located about 10 miles east of the city on South Dakota Highway 44. To get to Keystone and Mt. Rushmore from the airport takes about 45 minutes. If you rent a car at the airport here's the route to the Roosevelt Inn: Follow SD 44 West toward Rapid City to the junction of US Truck 16. That is also known as Southeast Bypass. Follow US16 Truck west about 5 miles to the junction of US16. Stay on US16 for about 18 miles then follow US16A west toward Mt. Rushmore. Click Here to See Map. Rapid City is served by United, Northwest, Delta and Frontier airlines. The schedules seem to change frequently so we've given up trying to keep them current on this page. You will need to contact the airlines or a travel agent for flight times. You can also updated information about arrivals and departures by telephoning the airport's automated flight information line at 605-393-2850. Some air travelers choose to fly only as far as Denver then rent a vehicle there and drive up to the Black Hills. The drive to the Black Hills from the Denver Airport takes about six hours. The Rapid City Regional Airport telephone number is 605-394-4195. Charter flights are also available from Westjet Air Center http://www.westjetair.com located at the Rapid City Regional Airport. Their telephone number is 605-393-2500. Now for the good news: There are almost never any delays at the Rapid City Regional Airport due to increased security measures. The airport is well-staffed and flights are infrequent so preboarding checks can be done fairly fast. Several car rental agencies are available at the airport, however during peak travel seasons, you need to book your rental car in advance. Shuttle ("limousine") service is available between the airport and keystone.
