Black Hills Radio StationsThe Black Hills are an excellent place to test the quality of your car radio -- and, we might add, your tolerance for right-wing talk and country & western music. No radio station covers all of the hills and after sundown, so your choices are decidedly limited unless you happen to be near the top of a hill, in which case you can pick up stations from as far away as Mexico. Also, any time you drive from one place to another, keeping your radio tuned can be a challenge as you drive around hills and into low spots. Keystone happens to be located below the surrounding hills so reception is not always the best. Our table lists the quality of our reception in Keystone, but we have a tall building on which to place our antenna so our reception is better than most. (Ditto, for local TV. See note below.) So in an effort to lessen your risk for ear pollution, we present the following list. Also be aware that due to the use of "repeater stations" you may be able to pick up many of these stations on additional frequencies. KBHE (NPR), for instance, can be picked up on FM 88.5, FM 90.3 and FM 91.5 in addition to the listed frequency of FM 89.3
Note About TV: As of this writing (January, 2004), Keystone does not have a working television cable operator. Several motels -- and the Roosevelt Inn -- have satellite receivers, but because of a federal rules, network channels are generally not available. Keystone is considered in the broadcast area covered by the Rapid City television stations and the local stations refuse to provide letters authorizing the satellite operators to provide network channels. Thus, most of the motels in Keystone DO NOT CARRY NETWORK TELEVISION because they are too low in the valley to pick up off-air broadcasts. The exception is the Roosevelt Inn. Because our building is tall, we are able to get off-air signals from the local stations. The boadcast signals are not as sharp as the digital satellite signals, but they are watchable. The moral of this story is that if you have a favorite network TV show and you plan to stay in Keystone, you'd better ask what TV channels are available when you book. Note About Satellite Radio: The Black Hills -- indeed, most of South Dakota -- is an excellent location to try out your new satellite radio. When driving across South Dakota or most anywhere in the West for that matter, towns tend to be few and far between, so if you have a satellite radio receiver you can save yourself a lot of tuning.
