Open All Year
This is one of the world's most interesting geological landmarks and was declared the nation's first national monument by Theodore Roosevelt in 1906. Devil's Tower is actually the core of an ancient volcano, exposed by millions of years of erosion. It is also one of the nation's most popular rock climbs. On most any given day in summer visitors can watch tiny humans ascend the tower and be awed by its scale. The area on top is about three acres.
For information about climbing Devil's Tower visit the National Park Service Climbing Page. Climbers must register befor and after their climb, however there is no charge.
Although the tower can be viewed without actually going into the national park, time spent at the visitor center is well worth while for the historical and geological perspective offered by the displays. The park covers more than 1,300 acres of rolling hills and pine forests. Deer, prairie dogs, and other wildlife are abundant.
