South Dakota Air and Space Museum
More than 25 aircraft are on display at the South Dakota Air and Space Museum at Ellisworth Air Force Base near Rapid City.  This is a B52 outfitted as it would have appeared during the War in Vietnam, circa, 1968.

Time Needed: Depends on your interest in antique aircraft
Best Time To Go: Open Year Round. Anytime between 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. daily from mid-May to mid-September. Winter hours from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Directions: Follow US16A and US16 east to I-90 then east on I-90 to Exit 66 - Box Elder 
Cost: Free, but there is a nominal charge if you want to take a tour of Ellsworth Air Force Base (recommended) 
Highlights: Nice collection of WWII birds, and tour of a missile silo

Open All Year
    This is a must-see museum if you are interested in WWII aircraft. On display are the B29, B25, B26, C47, T-38 and 22 other vintage planes. There are also several antique planes inside as well as other aviation memorbilia.
   The museum also has an excellent section about the early Stratobowl high-altitude ballon flights of the 1930s. These flights actually launched the space age. The section gives a detailed history of these flights as well as some of the actual items used in the flights.  
     The museum is located near the main gate to Ellsworth Air Force Base (history) in Box Elder, South Dakota.
