Description: The Homestake Gold Mine officially closed in December 2001 after more than 125 years of operation. The future of the mine remains uncertain as of this writing (January 2003) however the visitor center remains open. In the years before its closing the Homestake Mine was the largest gold mine in the western hemisphere, producing about 350,000 ounces of gold a year. It was also the deepest, with shafts sinking more than 8,000 feet into the earth. Above-ground tours are no longer offered, however visitors to Lead (pronounced like leed) can visit the Lead mining museum which is open all year. (This museum is not affiliated with Homestake.) Currently the open cut is being partially filled and many of the old above-ground mining building are now gone.
