| Description: |
You might be surprised to find that this attraction isn't what you
expect. Visitors have been coming to the D.C. Booth Fish Hatchery for more
than 100 years just to enjoy the park-like setting. You also get a chance
to feed the fish and see them swimming behind huge underwater windows.
The hatchery is
one of the oldest
operating hatcheries in the country dedicated to fish culture and
resource management. It originally was constructed to stock trout
populations in the Black Hills and operated as in that role
until mid-1980s.
Today is is operated by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service as an
historic and cultural heritage center and museum. It is called a "living
fishery museum" that still rears trout for the Black Hills. It
also is a museum of fishery records and artifacts for educational,
research, and historic purposes.
