| Description: |
The State of South
Dakota operates this hatchery which first opened in 1918. The hatchery
may be unique in that it is located at a natural spring which produces
some 6 million gallons of water per day. The hatchery produces some
500,000 trout and salmon per year. The Aquatic Education Interpretive
Center is located on the hatchery grounds.
The center
open to visitors and features exhibits on the hatchery operation, fish
habitat and tips for anglers. There is also a model of a flowing stream
showing both harmful and beneficial human actions in the watershed and
stream. Videos show the relationship between hatchery operations and
fisheries management.
