Skiing

Downhill skiing in the Black Hills is confined almost entirely in the two Northern Hills ski resorts near Lead -- Terry Peak and Deer Mountain. Both areas have the full compliment of ski lifts and snow-making equipment. Deer Moutain also has some cross-country trails.     Under ideal conditions the season will run from November to March however in recent years it has tended to be shorter because of warm temperatures.      Only cross-country skiing is available near Keystone, but the Bear Mountain trail, about 12 miles to the west, is one of the best cross-country skiing areas in the Hills. Throughout the Black Hills there are about a dozen designated cross-country ski trails. These include both the Centennial and George S. Mickelson trails, each 110 miles in length.
