Gambling

Deadwood is the center of casino gambling in the Black Hills. Gaming -- as it's called these days -- was reintroduced in Deadwood in 1989. It was the first city in America outside of Nevada and Atlantic City, NJ, were casino gambling was legalized.        Nearly 80 casinos now operate in Deadwood, and they offer slot machines, poker and black jack. Bets of up to $100 are accepted.        The only other casino gambling in Western South Dakota is at the Prairiewind Casino on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation east of Hot Springs.        Throughout South Dakota, most bars are now called casinos and feature the state-operated video lottery machines. These are dull, useless machines with lousy payouts.
