Rock Climbing is one of the most popular adventure sports in the Black Hills. Much of it is centered in the Keystone area with the Needles area being one of the most popular climbing locals. ![]() Mountaineers say most Black Hills climbs are short, but very difficult. Free climbing is popular here because the natural granite, though sharp and abrasive, is almost always sound. The premier climb is the 865-foot-high of Devil's Tower which has more than 80 routes to the summit. In the Needles-Sylvan Lake area of Custer State Park there are nearly a thousand granite spires with the tallest having assents of 300-feet or more. For more information see "Climbing the Needles -- Touch the Sky" published by the American Alpine Club. One noteworthy climb close to Keystone is the "Little Devil's Tower" in Custer State Park. For novices there's even a rock climbing school located in Hill City. Climbs up various limestone cliff faces are also popular throughout the Black Hills.
