Horseback Riding
Horesback riding is one of the most popular pastimes
in the Black Hills. Throughout the hills there are more than a dozen
riding
outfitters where you can rent horses or join riding tours. Organized
rides
are generally of one or two hours, half days, or all days. Prices tend
to land in the the $20 per hour range. Or $140 for an all-day ride.
(2006 rates)
The
Keystone Stables, on Highway 16A about
three miles north of the Roosevelt Inn is the closest riding stable.
Holy Smoke stables are nearby. There are numerous others near Custer
and Hill City.
Many of
the trails operated maintained
by the US Forest Service are open to horseback riding. In fact, nearly
all of the trails near Keystone (Cathedral Spires, Sunday Gulch and
Harney
Peak are the exceptions) are open for horses.
Also, most
Black Hills Forest service roads are open for horseback riders as well
as the Buffalo
Gap National Grasslands.
Additionally, virtually all of the Forest
Service roads are suitable for riding.
The National Forest Service has two
campgrounds set aside for campers with horses. They are administered by
a private company, Forest
Recreation Management which handles bookings.
More information about trails and
horses can be found at travelinghorses.com
and
from the South Dakota Game,
Fish and Parks Department.
