A B-52 at the South Dakota Air and Space Museum

One of the largest aircraft at the South Dakota Air and Space Museum is this retired B-52 bomber decked out as it would have looked in the late 1960s. It is one of some 30 aircraft on display in addition to numerous in-door exhibits.

     Ellsworth Air Force Base, just east of Rapid City at Box Elder, is home to about a quarter  of America's B1 Bombers. It's also home of the rather nice Air & Space Museum, which features a nice collection of retired warbirds. Roosevelt Inn Mount Rushmore

     You might have to get used to the idea that this museum is free (although they'll accept donations). Certainly a highlight is being able to walk right up and touch an old B36 or any one of the other score of planes on display.
 
     Inside you can learn about the all-but-forgotten Stratobowl high-altitude balloon flights of the 1930's. If you wish, we tell tell you how to get to the Stratosphere Bowl which isn't even marked on most maps these days.
 
     Anyhow, if military hardware fascinates you or your kids, you might even want to take the base tour.
