Black Hills Ghost Town Pictures

The pictures on this page are basically snapshots of various sites we have run across in the Black Hills. Many ghost towns are all but invisible unless the visitor can carefully examine the site. A few, however, are well preserved as these photographs show.

Old School at the Ghost Town of Spokane

This is a picture of the old school at Spokane near what is now Custer State Park. The townsite is on public land and may be freely visited. It is located just off Iron Mountain Road near Playhouse Road in Custer County. There is no road to the townsite so visitors need to walk about a half mile down a path to get there. The town includes several old buildings and remnants of the mine which supported the town.

Old Barn at Old Ghost Town of Otho

This is an old barn at Otho which is located on a forest service road east of Keystone. The site is viewable from the public roadway, but the building's themselves are on private land which is often the case. Otho and nearby Glendale, another old ghost town have about 15 privately owned buildings between them.

Northern Hills Ghost Town

This is an abandoned farm that was not, strictly speaking part of a ghost town although it lies in the vicinity of several in the northern Black Hills. Old Ghost Mine near KeystoneGhost mines often have tunnels and shafts that remain open and, as in this example, can open unexpectedly into a rather substantial drop off. As a rule ghost mines are easier to find than ghost towns because the rock piles, pits, tunnels and shafts remain visible. Almost all of the larger and more spectacular sites are on private land however and, thus, cannot be legally visited without permission from the land owners. Land owners, however, almost never give permission because it opens the risk of legal liability should you fall into a hole and become injured or die. Most just say "NO".
