Spelunking
Nobody
who doesn't
have the experience or the services of an experienced guide should ever
try spelunking -- cave exploration. If you go in under the wrong
circumstances
you may never be seen again. Caves can be dangerous places even without the monsters created by Hollywood.

Spelunkers can, and do, explore Black Hills caves. But for the rest of us, there are guided tours.
There
are at least two caves in the Black Hills where you can have the a real
cave exploration experience in a safe guided tour:
The
National Park
Services offers an 8-hour natural spelunking tour of Jewel Cave.
Certain
qualifications must be met before you can join this tour -- including
squeezing
through a small box. but we've been told the experience is well
worthwhile. Should you wish to do this, you'll need to have old clothes
and be physically fit. Part of the tour involves squeezing
through on your hands and knees. Wind Cave offers a similar tour.
Most commercial caves do not allow spelunking,
although experienced spelunkers may be able to convince the owners to
let them in. Other caves in the Black Hills can be explored
but exploring them invovlves getting permission from the
landowner. Finding these caves, however, is another matter.
They aren't marked on maps.
