Geocaching the Black Hills
For those of you who don't know, Geocaching is a popular treasure
hunting game where "players" use their GPS devices to locate various
"treasures" hidden by other Geocachers in out-of-the-way locations.
We've put quotes around "players" and "treasures" because the
terms are used very loosely. The real fun is in enjoying the
outdoors. And, in the Black Hills that also means being
guided to scenic spots far off the beaten track.
These locations are listed at
http://www.geocaching.com/
and there are more than 600 sites listed for
the Black Hills. The Keystone zip code (57751) which
includes Mt. Rushmore has nearly 330 listings. Some
of
these spots offer spectacular views. Custer State Park also has an
official list of Geocaching sites for it's annual game which runs from
May to October. Details about South Dakota Geocaching can be found at http://www.sdgfp.info/Parks/Recreation/Geocaching.htm
Now, you
don't have to actually
register as a Geocache member to g o to these spots. All are located
on public land and most are accessable by hikers with average
abilities. All you really need is a GPS device and a good pair of
shoes. (Bug spray, water, food, sun block, rain gear, a hiking pole,
etc. become desireable once you get into it, although some Geocachers
seem to hike with more equipment than the lunar rovers.)
Geocaching is an activity that
the whole family can enjoy. Even young children can handle
these walks in the woods and the thrill of
finding a treasure and entering your name in the cache site log book is
an extra bonus. And, even though it's called a game, nobody
keeps
score. Also, the best treasure is some fresh air and sunshine.
By the way, try this for a unique geocache
location: N44 58' and W103 46'. This is the geographic center of
the United States located in a pasture about 20 miles north of Belle
Fourche on US Highway 85 and west of Castle Rock. A
stake marks the spot.
There's more we could say, but if this
activity appeals to you, go to: http://www.geocaching.com/
